PDC (Polycrystalline Diamond Compact) drill bits belong to the fixed cutter bit family. They adopt man-made polycrystalline diamond cutters to shear rock formations instead of crushing rock, delivering outstanding wear resistance and remarkably improved penetration speed during drilling operations.
Overview
PDC drill bits enjoy broad application scenarios, covering oil & gas exploration, mineral mining, geothermal well drilling, and foundation engineering construction. They work on a completely different rock-breaking principle compared with conventional roller cone bits. Roller cone bits rely on impact and compression to break rock, while PDC bits mount premium synthetic diamond cutters on tungsten carbide substrates. As the bit rotates, these cutters continuously shear and scrape the rock face.
Thanks to this unique shearing structure, PDC bits can achieve a much higher rate of penetration (ROP). Their excellent anti-abrasion performance also greatly extends the service life of the bit. In field drilling work, operators do not need to pull the drill string out to replace bits so often. This effectively cuts down downtime, lowers overall drilling costs, and brings stable working performance for various medium and soft rock formations.
